Music plays a key role in the spiritual atmosphere we create at Sha’ar. We know its power to move and elevate us; to express feelings words can’t capture; to bind us to one another when words get in the way.
Similarly, music played a key role in the civil rights revolution of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Singing for inspiration as well as consolation, activists transformed picket lines, paddy wagons and meeting halls into sanctuaries of song and melody, a form of protest as powerful as any other.
After a discussion of the racial issues that continue to challenge us today, we’ll come together for a brief Selichot service traditionally recited at midnight, launching us into the High Holy Days with its stirring melodies and moving prayers, and inspiring us to remember that our own freedom, even our freedom to repent, is inextricably bound up with that of all others.
This program is also a perfect setting to introduce us to themes and people we’ll encounter on our Civil Rights Journey to the South November 6-10, 2013. It’s not too late to register. Deadline is Sept 2.
