Township Enforces "No Parking" Rule on Ridgewood Boulevard North

Parking has been outlawed on a portion of the street for years, but the rule was never enforced.

Washington Township began enforcing a "no parking" ordinance on Ridgewood Boulevard North between East Glen Avenue and Manhattan Avenue this week, but the rule has drawn criticism from some residents.

The law had been on the books for "many, many years," but signs had never been posted, according to Mayor Janet Sobkowicz.

Sobkowicz said residents had reported cars parked too close to the intersection of East Glen Avenue. Police asked several drivers to move their cars, but could not issue a summons without posting "no parking signs."

"It's a rough corner," Sobkowicz said. "There were safety concerns."

Now that the signs are up, Washington Township Police said other residents have said they would prefer to not have them.

Sobkowicz said the situation reminded her of a time a few years ago when residents brought her a petition for a street light. The township put up a light, only to have other residents complain it was shining in their windows at night.

"I don't know what's going to happen," Sobkowicz said. "Sometimes something goes up and then, eventually, people don't notice as much."
