Township Tax Bills Delayed

Washington Township residents may have noticed they haven't received their tax bills yet, which are typically due Aug. 1. Because of the delay, residents will have extra time to pay their taxes, but interest on late payments will revert back to Aug. 1.

Mayor Janet Sobkowicz said during the council meeting Monday night that because of the , the county was not able to certify the tax rate or tax levy to send the bills out on time.

Residents can wait for the bills to be mailed or they can call or visit the tax office to find out how much money they owe. If they pay before the bill arrives in the mail, they will get a receipt, Sobkowicz said.

Sobkowicz said she hopes to have the bills mailed out Friday, Saturday or Monday. Because of the delay, residents will have 25 days from the date of mailing to pay their taxes. But the mayor warned that interest on late payments will begin at the original due date.

"If you do not pay by whatever the extension date is, the interest rate by law does revert to Aug. 1," she said.

Sobkowicz added that residents did not receive an estimated tax bill because the final versions will be done soon.

"We didn't want to send out estimated bills and then two days later send out the real bills," she said.

According to Sobkowicz, this isn't the first time tax bills have been late.

"This has happened in the past and a lot of residents do come in and want to pay and get it over with," she said.

A notice alerting residents has also been placed on the township website.
