Track Team Raising Money for National Meet

The Westwood High School girls track team is raising funds for North Carolina trip

Some members of the girls track team were invited to Greensboro, N.C. for the New Balance High School National meet, but in order to go, they need to raise money for the trip.

According to Councilman Steve Cascio, who is the track parent spearheading the fund-raising campaign, lodging and expenses cost between $3,000 and $3,500 and the Westwood Regional School District does not have the money to send the student-athletes. Eight girls are planning to go to compete in four relay events and one individual event at the national meet, which is scheduled for June 16-18.

Corrine Meyers, Gabriella Slozen, Megan Kocher, Michelle Cascio, Dana Bianchi, Alexandra Cimino and Rebecca Fasano are scheduled to run in the 4 x 800 meter relay, 4 x 400 meter relay, sprint medley relay, 4 x 200 meter relay and the 100 meter hurdles.

The Westwood Track Club is soliciting donations from local businesses and the community at large to help send the girls to the event. Cascio said the club has applied for non-profit status so donations would be tax deductible.

The girls track team has been very successful this season, breaking school records and being named Group 1 North Sectional Champions for indoor track for 2011. Five girls have achieved First Team All-County honors. Last weekend the girls team finished second in the Group 2 North 1 Sectional State Meet behind Mahwah High School by just two points.
