Undefeated YJCC Sharks Heading to State Championships

The season follows the sudden death of coach RJ Anderson last summer.

The Bergen Sharks finished the 2011-2012 season undefeated. The 165-member team beat the Middlesex Blue Dolphins from the Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County by a score of 282-273 to take the YM-YWHA league’s Division A title in the last duel meet on Sunday, January 29 at the YJCC in the Township of Washington.

The Sharks are the competitive swim team for 5- to 18-year-olds.

"It was a close one for the Sharks; the Blue Dolphins are a top team,” said Bergen Sharks head coach Mike Seeback. “We hope to live up to our reputation at the state championships on March 3 and 4.”

The state championship meet will pit eight teams against each other for the honor of being best-in-state. The meet will be held at the JCC of Central New Jersey in Scotch Plains.

According to Seeback, the Bergen Sharks have continued to break their own team records meet after meet. At the duel meet on January 29, 16 team records were broken; the total for the season is 66 records broken. Washington Township resident Meg Detitta set a personal best in the 25 freestyle at Sunday's meet.

Seeback said he is heartened—and somewhat relieved—that the team has had such a successful year. While it was very successful last season and showed great promise for this year, the team reeled in reaction to Seeback to carry the team onward. He is assisted by coaches Alex Laski, Kenny Wise, Brianne Niego and Nicole Calianese.
