Westwood Announces Weekly Recycling Pick-Up

A new contract awarded by the borough starts this summer.

Westwood residents can expect weekly recycling pick-up starting this summer.

The borough earlier this year which will change the alternating weeks schedule to weekly pick-ups. Officials announced Friday that the new pick-up schedule will begin July 4.

The contract will cost the borough about $32,000 for the rest of the year. DPW Superintendent Rick Woods said he expects the weekly recycling pick-up will generate some revenue for the borough, as some residents currently throw out recyclables with their trash on the weeks there is no recycling pick-up.

Mayor John Birkner said at a previous council meeting that he expects the contract will save money and free up DPW employees to spend more time on other projects.

"We're adding a tremendous service to the borough," Birkner said. "We're utilizing the manpower that we do have to take care of many things that they're unable to get to."

The recyclable materials for weekly pick-ups include glass, plastic, aluminum, tin, paper and cardboard.

There will be no change to garbage or yard waste pick-up schedules.
