Amazon Driver From Woodbridge Stole Packages, Police Say

A resident noticed several Amazon packages discarded on the side of the road; police say the Woodbridge delivery driver ripped into them.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — An Amazon delivery driver from Woodbridge was arrested this week and charged with stealing Amazon packages he was meant to deliver.

Trey Johnson, 31, of Woodbridge Twp., was hired to make the deliveries in Morris County, and the thefts occurred in several towns in that area, police said. The packages started disappearing back in mid November.

Stunningly, Johnson is the second Amazon delivery driver to be arrested this week in New Jersey; the second is a Jersey City man who allegedly stole packages he was delivering for Amazon in Metuchen and Keansburg.

Both men worked for companies that were subcontracted by Amazon to deliver packages.

Johnson was charged Wednesday with theft of movable property. According to Chatham Township Chief of Police Thomas Miller, on Nov. 14, a resident in that area noticed a bunch of Amazon packages discarded on the side of the road in the woods. That is a photo of the packages above.

Some of the packages had been opened and had the contents stolen, while others remained sealed in their original packages. Police say Johnson ripped into them and took the goods out.

While investigating, police learned that a similar incident occurred in neighboring Harding Township, Chief Miller said.

Police determined that Johnson was assigned to deliver the recovered packages from both jurisdictions, Miller said. Police say Johnson rummaged through the packages, taking some things and discarding the rest. The value of the stolen items was $1,974.27, police said. Johnson worked for a third party Amazon contractor, Prime EFS.

In the Metuchen and Keansburg incidents, that driver worked for Last Mile Delivery, a company based in Elizabeth and subcontracted to deliver for Amazon.

According to Miller, further investigation "utilizing available technologies" placed Johnson in the area where the undelivered and opened packages were later located. Johnson was arrested, charged and released pending a court appearance, Miller said.
