Prosecutor: New Jersey Man Pulls Knife, Killed By Police

Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 75-year-old man after confronting police with a knife.

A 75-year-old man was shot and killed by police after they were called to his home to quell a disturbance on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Talbot Schroeder, of Old Bridge, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:27 a.m. after an Old Bridge police officer repeatedly told the man to drop a knife, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Police were called to the house at 40 Cedar Grove Place shortly before 6 a.m. and discovered Schroeder, who authorities said was visibly distraught, had attacked a family member, threatened another and injured himself with a knife, the prosecutor’s office said. The family member who was attacked was not seriously injured.

A preliminary investigation by the prosecutor’s office determined police had attempted to calm Schroeder and repeatedly warned him to drop the knife, before firing a single shot, killing him.

Police immediately contacted the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office following the incident, which took over the investigation.

Carol Ray, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years, said Schroeder, who lived in the home with his wife and a son, was very nice.

She told mycentraljersey.com that the family never caused any problems, they were always polite with neighbors and they were very friendly.

Another neighbor said she was alerted to the police by her husband, who told her to “lock the doors,” according to the news site.
