Albany Capital Center expands to host larger events by 2027 (news-usa.today) — Albany's Capital Center at 126 State Street is moving ahead with an expansion that will boost its rentable space to about 84,000 square feet by early 2027, allowing it to host larger conventions and events. The project will integrate a historic building, preserve downtown character, and build on the venue's strong track record of drawing visitors and hotel stays.
   

2. Albany mayor to present 2027 budget plan amid $55M deficit (wnyt.com) — Albany residents face a proposed 2027 city budget aimed at closing a daunting $55 million deficit, with possible job cuts, service reductions, or tax hikes on the table. Mayor Dorcey Applyrs will unveil the plan October 1, then hold a citywide listening tour and virtual sessions before the Common Council's November 30 deadline to approve a final budget.

UAlbany Faculty, Staff Honored with SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence (albany.edu) — Albany residents can take pride in UAlbany faculty and staff earning SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, librarianship, and professional work. Sixteen honorees were praised for elevating students' experiences and strengthening one of the city's most important public institutions.
   

4. New Netherland and the World Conference Set for Albany (newyorkalmanack.com) — Albany residents can look forward to the New Netherland Institute's annual conference at the New York State Museum on November 7-8, exploring how the Dutch colony connected with Indigenous neighbors, Europe, and the Caribbean. Scholars will lead several sessions, continuing a decades-long fall tradition of New Netherland research in the Capital Region.
   

5. Leonardo Guzman lawsuit: Albany County jail officers beat, pepper-sprayed him (syracuse.com) — Albany County residents are learning of a new lawsuit accusing county jail officers of beating and pepper-spraying former inmate Leonardo Guzman in an area allegedly kept off camera. The suit, tied to his earlier manslaughter case on Central Avenue in Albany, adds to several recent claims alleging excessive force and poor oversight at the jail.
