Police: Man Picking Up Food for Soup Kitchen Struck, Killed by His Own Car While Trying to Thwart Thief
The incident occurred in North Bay Shore Friday morning, police say.

A North Amityville man was struck and killed by his own car while he attempted to prevent a man from stealing the vehicle in North Bay Shore Friday morning, police said.
According to police, 69-year-old Dionel Ramirez parked his Hyundai in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven located at 148 Pine Aire Drive and left the vehicle running with the door open at about 5:45 a.m.
Ramirez was at the store picking up excess food to bring to a soup kitchen when a man entered his vehicle and attempted to drive away, police said.

Ramirez attempted to stop the man, who then ran him over with the Hyundai, police said.
Ramirez was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Friday afternoon that the stolen Hyundai has been found, but they did not say where. No arrests have been made.
