Project GROW Comes to FRUITion at Laurel Park

Brentwood Union Free School District's Laurel Park Celebrates First Harvest of Project: GROW

Brentwood, N.Y. (January 2019)—Brentwood Union Free School District's Laurel Park Elementary School recently celebrated the first hydroponic harvest of the district-wide initiative, Project GROW (Green Resource for Observing Water). Ms. Argueta’s third grade bilingual class was excited to harvest fruits and vegetables from the class’s hydroponic gardens to make kale-strawberry smoothies with Brentwood High School’s science research teacher, Dr. Rebecca Grella.

In October, twelve Brentwood High School students from its acclaimed science research program presented the eleven elementary schools in the district with portable hydroponic grow stations. Over the last few months, Brentwood’s elementary students have had the responsibility of sustaining their units with proper care including timer settings, water levels, and pH Levels. Project GROW has encouraged students to make a proactive effort to be cognizant about improving our ecosystems.
