Mt. Kisco Methodist Church to Hold 'Faith in Action' on Sunday

(MOUNT KISCO, New York, May 24, 2011)—On June 5^th, 2011, the United Methodist Church of Mount Kisco will hold its Faith in Action Sunday, an annual outreach program.  On this day, in lieu of attending their weekly service, church members will serve in the local community—this year’s focus will be on local low-income senior citizens and natural disaster victims.  On June 5^th, UMC of Mount Kisco won’t go to church. They will be the church. 

“My goal for this event is to give each congregant an opportunity to be a missionary for a day,” explains the Rev. Matt Curry, “I also hope that the community will catch a glimpse of our church’s caring and compassionate spirit.”

This year’s project will benefit Carpenter Avenue Senior Housing Complex, part of the Mount Kisco Housing Authority: the 76-unit subsidized living apartment complex houses low-income families & senior citizens.  Church members of all ages will be joining together to participate in activities such as planting a flower bed, on-site repairs and general cleaning of the housing complex’s grounds. 

While there, they will also be preparing lunch for all participants and assembling health kits to send to the United Methodist Committee of Relief (UMCOR).  These kits contain living necessities for those who have lost or been forced from their homes due to human conflict and natural disaster.  The kits include vital supplies for hygiene and safety such as bath soap, toothbrushes and bandages.

Since 2007, Faith in Action Sunday has encouraged churches throughout the country to take a proactive role in serving and bonding with their local neighborhoods. The program has inspired churches to practice what they preach, and hopefully embolden the community at large to do the same, by meeting the needs of their neighbors.
