Great Chappaqua Bake Sale Will Help Fund Meals For Houston Kids

Now in its 8th year, the bake sale is a fundraising star for the national No Kid Hungry campaign. Save the date: Oct. 14.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — The 8th annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale takes place Oct. 14 at the Chappaqua Children's Book Festival. The organizers are targeting the money raised this year to something a little bit different. Different as in geographically.

"In the process of planning this year's event, we along with all of you, were so incredibly moved by the impact of Hurricane Harvey and the devastating stories and images coming out of Texas," said Allison Spiegel in a letter to supporters. "When we learned the Houston Public School system would be offering free breakfast and lunch for all students for the entire academic year, we knew the need would be long term and we knew we needed to help."

And that help is substantial. The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale has proven that a small town can make a big difference in the fight against childhood hunger. In its first six years, the GCBS raised more than $100,000 for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign in New York. Since 2011, the national No Kid Hungry network has helped bring millions of additional meals to kids who need them.

"We requested that Share Our Strength consider donating funds raised at this year's GCBS to meals programs for children in Texas," Spiegel said. "While this does not negate the need for continued support of meals programs here in New York State, Share Our Strength agreed that our funds would help supplement the incredible work they are already doing on the ground in Texas."

"Children are in need, no matter their geographic location, and we are so proud of this community of supporters for their dedication and devotion to this cause," Spiegel said.
