Long Island Basks in Record-Warmth on Christmas Eve, Christmas

Things will remain unseasonably mild in Commack this weekend.

If you were dreaming of a warm Christmas...

There was no need for that new winter hat or gloves on Christmas Day as temperatures soared to record highs in the area.

At Long Island MacArthur Airport, Thursday’s high of 56 degrees tied a daily record set in 1994. At LaGuardia Airport, the recorded high of 63 degrees easily topped the old Christmas Day record of 57 degrees set in 1990.

Christmas Eve was just as toasty, with precipitation records also set in the area.

Things will remain in the mild side this weekend on the island as a high-pressure system builds to the south, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Today- Sunny, with a high near 47. West wind around 10 mph.
  • Tonight- Mostly clear, with a low around 34. West wind 6 to 9 mph.
  • Saturday- Sunny, with a high near 52. West wind around 7 mph.
  • Saturday Night- Increasing clouds, with a low around 39. Southwest wind around 9 mph.
  • Sunday- A chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 50. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
  • Sunday Night- A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
