Community Comes Together To Help Injured East Hampton Mechanic

The GoFundMe account was set up to help the East Hampton family handle escalating expenses.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — When one of their own is facing challenges, the East Hampton community comes together to help.

A GoFundMe account up has been set up for Alex Alvarado, who was injured during an altercation while at the beach during a July fireworks display, his mother-in-law Hope Herrlin said. So far, the GoFundMe, "Help for Alex and His Family," has raised $4,390 of its $20,000 goal.

Alvarado suffered a major head trauma, Herrlin said. He was transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital due to bleeding on the brain, she said; while he was discharged later that evening, there was "a very limited list of things he could do," she said, adding that the doctor had ordered mostly rest.

"He was diagnosed with a severe concussion," and will need to get therapy for his vision and his brain, Herrlin said.

"We do not know how long he will be unable to work right at the moment, as more testing is needed. As you know Al is always there to help out many of you with your vehicle repairs and other odds and ends at his shop," she wrote. "With Al being out of the shop this has put added stress on my daughter Brittany to keep the shop running while he is recovering from his injuries. His employees are doing a great job helping them keep the wheels turning but they could use the help of the local community."

In addition, there have been some insurance concerns, Herrlin said. "They are a local family trying to keep a business going under tremendous financial strain with Al not being there to run the shop," Herrlin said. "I am asking people to donate whatever they can to lift some of the financial burden they will incur. I am hopeful the community will help out this family struggling to survive. I know they have helped out many people in all these years running Alvarado Mechanical and being of service to the community," she said.
