Hunting Season On Long Island

The DEC released a list of Long Island's Public Hunting Areas including areas in East Hampton and Southampton.

CertainΒ areas of Long Island are open or will soon be opening for hunting.

Waterfowl hunters often travel to Long Island during this time to participate in one of β€œnature’s grandest spectacles”, according to the DEC.

In addition, the thousands of acres of marshes and tidal wetlands are favored rest stops for flocks of migrating ducks and geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Deer hunting is also abundant in many areas of Long Island.

The DEC released a list of Long Island’s Public Hunting Areas as a reminder to hunters what is open to hunt in specific areas.

In the East Hampton Cooperative Hunting Area:

  • Amsterdam Beach is open to deer hunting by archery until Dec. 31.
  • Hither Hills/Hither Woods is open to deer hunting by archery until Dec. 31, deer hunting by special firearms on weekdays (permit required), mall game hunting from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28., and waterfowl hunting from Dec. 1 until the end of the season.
  • Montauk State Park is open to deer hunting by archery until Dec. 31, deer hunting by special firearms on weekdays (permit required), and waterfowl hunting from Dec. 1 until the end of the season.
  • Napeague State Park is open to deer hunting by archery until Dec. 31, small game hunting, and waterfowl hunting from Dec. 1 until the end of the season.

In the Southampton Cooperative Hunting Area (Town of Southampton Cooperative Access permit required):

  • Barrell Hill is open to deer hunting by archery until Jan. 31.
  • Noyac is open to open to deer hunting by archery until Jan. 3, and deer hunting by special firearms (permit required).
  • Southampton Hills is open to deer hunting by archery until Jan. 31.
  • Tuckahoe Swamp is open to deer hunting by archery until Jan. 31.
