Local Resident Honored at Montauk Chamber of Commerce's Annual Gala

Vinnie Grimes was selected as "Person of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce.

Vinnie Grimes, a well-known citizen of the Montauk community, was honored at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce’s annual End of Season Gala as on Saturday, Nov. 15.

“Vinnie has given a lifetime of service to his community which is why the Montauk Chamber selected him as Person of The Year for 2014,” Laraine Creegan, executive director of the chamber, said.

Grimes was born and raised in Montauk. He dedicates much of his time for the betterment and quality of life in Montauk. He and his wife raised their two sons Keith and Jimmy Grimes in Montauk.

He was very involved with scouting and in many other community groups. Grimes was a Boy Scout since age 11 and became a Scout Leader as well. Some of his many accomplishments include active membership in the Montauk Fire Department and as the Fire Commissioner in 1968, and active member of The Lions Club.

He is one of the Founders of the Blessing of the Fleet in 1955, Co - Founder and Chairman for Life of the Montauk Horse Show which started in 1970 and continued for 30 years.

The Montauk Horse Show raised money and donated it to other organizations such as Boy and Girl Scouts, The Fire Department, Youth Club, The Montauk Lighthouse and many other groups. Grimes has been involved with many other Montauk organizations such as Trailblazers, The Lions Club and Lost Tribe (known as Sons and Daughters of East Hampton).
