Photo Of The Day: Ash Wednesday Observed In East Hampton

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Patch's photo of the day captures Reverend Denis Brunelle, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Hampton, imposing ashes on Ash Wednesday in front of Citarella on Pantigo Road.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian faith; Lent is a 40-day period of fasting that ends on Easter Sunday.

Parishioners are given ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads by a faith leader; the ashes are typically created from palm branches given out on Palm Sunday.
