Nor'easter: Flood Watch, Coastal Flood Advisory, High Wind Watch Issued

An approaching December nor’easter shows no signs of sparing Long Island from heavy rain and potentially damaging winds.

The National Weather Service has issued several alerts for the island:

• Flood watch- in effect from 6 a.m. Tuesday until 1 a.m. Wednesday
• Coastal flood advisory- in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 3 p.m. Tuesday
• High wind watch- in effect from 6 a.m. Tuesday until 6 p.m. Tuesday

Wind gusts will be strongest from late-morning until mid-afternoon Tuesday, the NWS said. These wind gusts of up to 60 mph may cause scattered power outages and minor property damage.

The latest forecast:

• Late Afternoon- A chance of light snow. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. East wind around 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Tonight- A chance of drizzle and snow before midnight, then rain. Temperature rising to around 38 by 4am. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a northeast wind 11 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
• Tuesday- Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 44. Wind chill values between 25 and 35. Breezy, with a northeast wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
• Tuesday Night- Rain, mainly before midnight. Low around 37. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. North wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
• Wednesday- Showers likely, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 42. North wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
• Wednesday Night- A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. Chance of precipitation is 40%
