Firefighter Injured in Woodmere Blaze Dies

An Inwood firefighter has died after suffering a heart attack while fighting a fire last week in Woodmere.
Joseph Sanford Jr. fell through the first floor of a Central Avenue home and went into cardiac arrest, according to NBC.
Sanford was found after a signal from his PASS alarm, which sends an alert when a firefighter is motionless for too long, according to the report.

The 17-year veteran of the Inwood Fire Department was rushed to a hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition, said Nassau County Police.
However, Sanford never regained consciousness and was taken off a ventilator Tuesday, according to the report.

A GoFundMe campaign was established in Sanford’s memory for his family. An outpouring of generosity from the community raised more than $27,000 in four days.
