Hempstead Village Named One Of New York's Top 10 Safest Places
SafeHome, a home security company, says Hempstead is one of the safest places in the country. What do you think?

Long Island's Hempstead Village was named one of the top 10 safest cities in New York by SafeHome.org. It was the only Long Island town to make it on the list.
According to SafeHome, it looked at several different factors to determine the scores it gave cities (all of which have a population of 45,000 or more). The most important factor was the FBI's reports of crimes over the last year. The organization also took into account the city's crime trends, giving more weight to areas with declines in crimes. The smallest factor was demographics that could impact crime, such as population density, unemployment, income and more.

SafeHome said it used FBI crime statistics from 2015 to compile the scores, which may explain why Hempstead, which has had many shootings and murders over just the last few weeks, was named one of the safest places in New York.
The safest place in New York, according to SafeHome, is Ramapo Town, located in Rockland County. Hempstead came in at No. 9, just behind New York City and just ahead of Amherst. It was placed in the top 25 percentile in the country. SafeHome gave Hempstead a "Safety Score" of 84.99. Greenwich, Conn., which was ranked the safest in the country, had a score of 92.71.
