Police: Taxi Driver Put in Chokehold, Robbed in New Cassel

Incident happened Tuesday night, cops said.

A taxi driver was put in a chokehold and robbed while on duty in New Cassel Tuesday night, according to Nassau County Police.

The Centro taxi driver, a 43-year-old woman, was called to pick up a fare on Catherine Street at 11:45 p.m., cops said. Within a few minutes, two men entered the cab, police said.

One man got into the back seat, grabbed the woman from behind, and restrained her in a chokehold, detectives said. A second man got into the front seat and went through the woman’s pockets, taking an unknown amount of cash, cops said.

The two fled south on foot on Catherine Street, cops said.

The driver reportedly escaped uninjured.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
