MAMARONECK, NY — Federal and local officials came to Mamaroneck to help the community better understand what to expect from the long-awaited effort to protect flood-prone areas of the village with the $88 million Mamaroneck and Sheldrake Rivers Flood Risk Management Project.

It has been less than a year since torrential rains from the remnants of post-tropical cyclone Ida caused a historic natural disaster in the village. The village is taking short and longer-range steps to help mitigate the risk of the next severe weather. SEE: Village of Mamaroneck Passes $1.36M Resolution For Emergency Dredging

Still, residents and officials in the village think another level of cooperation needs to be added.

Participants at the Emelin Theater event Tuesday raised questions about the regional nature of the problem, specifically the fact that Mamaroneck is downstream from several Westchester communities and a lot of the stormwater runoff that floods the village is theirs.

"Basically, we are doing our part here in the Village, now we need our wonderful and prosperous neighbors to help us saves lives and property by controlling their water extreme weather events," Mamaroneck Village Manager Jerry Barberio said Thursday.

At Deputy Mayor Lou Young's suggestion, Barberio asked Westchester County officials to convene a County/Municipal meeting of all eight to discuss and examine the devastating impacts of Ida-type events. He hopes it will happen within the month.
