Levittown Students Give Belly Rubs

Students read "How to Steal a Dog."

Belly rubs and cold wet noses were an integral part of Dyanne Case’s reading class in the Northside School library.

During the fourth- and fifth-grade readings of “How to Steal a Dog” by Barbara O’Connor, Bideawee rescue dogs Oliver and Toby gave canine encouragement to the students as part of the Pets for Literacy Program.

As the students took turns reading a page of the book, Oliver and Toby sat quietly at their sides or in their laps. Every now and then, the dogs rolled over for a belly rub or nudged a student for a scratch.

Ms. Case said the dogs enjoy the students’ company and give them confidence in their reading. “This is another excellent way to motivate the class to read,” she said.
