More Money to be Spent on Renovated Levittown Public Library
The library spent approximately $900,000 on renovating the first floor, but another expansion in the works will cost about $450,000 more.
The Levittown Public Library spent approximately $900,000 renovating its first floor, which was revealed to the public in late September, but it doesn't look like the spending will end there.
A month later, small further renovations were discussed at a Board of Directors meeting. At this Wednesday's meeting, however, larger measures were taken.
In order to answer issues of congestion and limited space for library materials, architect Shahla Nabari proposed a new plan to extend the front of the library to the sidewalk at Wednesday's library board meeting. This would add another seating area, Nabari said. Three out of four board of trustee members approved the expansion, which will cost roughly $450,000.

"As you can see the old book shelves were seven shelves high and now there's only six," said library employee Rusel Greller. "They actually cut off the top of each book shelf [because they lowered the ceiling] and got rid of any duplicate copies of books."
The library is hosting a book sale Nov. 18 to sell the used books that do not fit on the new shelves.

"A lot of people are upset because they come here for books and they're not here. So what's the point?" said Greller.
Concern was also voiced over the new book section. Each shelf stands approximately three feet tall, which is not convenient for those who cannot bend down easily or use walkers.
The board will meet again in December to discuss the actions that will be taken to remedy the library's shortcomings. What improvements would you like to see made? Leave a comment and let us know.
