DA: Long Beach Woman Stole $40K in Medicaid, Housing Benefits

Long Beach woman took rent subsidies, food stamps, and more by lying on forms, the DA said.

A Long Beach woman faces fraud and larceny charges for taking thousands of dollars of benefits she was not eligible to receive, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Ranessa Evans, 35, was arraigned Wednesday on felony grand larceny, welfare fraud, and offering a false instrument before Judge Rhonda Fischer, the DA said.

Evans reportedly filed false applications with Long Beach Housing Authority on three different occasions in April 2009, January 2010, and February 2013, officials said. She claimed her income was $1,620 a month from unemployment insurance, the DA said.

Between 2008 and 2010, Evans allegedly filed separate applications and decertifications for several benefits programs, including Medicaid, food stamps, and temporary assistance, the DA said.

Evans again claimed she had a minimal income on those applications, officials said.

On all her applications, Evans failed to mention that her boyfriend lived in her home, the DA said.

In total, Evans fraudulently received about $30,000 in rent subsidies and more than $10,000 in Medicaid, food stamp, and temporary assistance benefits, the DA said.

Evans’ charges included two counts of third-degree grand larceny, two counts of third-degree welfare fraud, and seven counts of first-degree offering a faults instrument for filing.

She is due back in court on Friday.
