The free afternoon event will offer kite flying, live entertainment, cultural performances, family activities, and local vendors, highlighting Latino culture and community connections in the city.

• Long Beach Sept. 11 memorial honors residents who died (liherald.com) — Long Beach residents recently gathered at the Virginia Avenue Garden of Remembrance to honor neighbors lost on and after Sept. 11, with their names read aloud in a moving ceremony. City leaders used the event to announce plans to make 9/11 an official holiday for city employees, pending union negotiations and formal council action over the coming year.

• Long Beach baseball programs build community through youth sports (liherald.com) — Youth baseball in Long Beach is booming, with Beach Baseball camps and the Beach Bombers travel program giving local kids structured coaching, teamwork skills, and new friendships that will carry into Long Beach High School. Families from Long Beach and nearby communities can also sign up for a three-date fundamentals clinic this fall in East Rockaway, with age-specific sessions for players 8 through 16.
