Massapequa Falls In Long Island Lacrosse Championships

Ward Melville defense, goalie allow just three Massapequa goals in their 12-3 win.

The Chiefs are a team used to averaging double-digits in scoring. But the Ward Melville defense clamped down and held Massapequa to just three goals on Saturday, winning the Long Island Class A lacrosse championship 12-3.

“Their goalie was hot. [He] made some great saves,” Chiefs head coach Tim Radomski said. “Things could have been different if we buried our shots … but take nothing away from Ward Melville, they’re a great team.”

Danny Nemirov made 12 saves for Ward Melville (20-0), including five just in the first quarter as his team took a 2-0 lead. Massapequa trailed 5-0 at halftime. The Chiefs' first goal of the game came with 5:02 left in the third quarter after Paul Bentz fed Craig Berge for a goal that made it 8-1.

Griffin Barnathon and Tyler Dowd each scored goals for Massapequa in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs, who end their season at 16-3, held the advantage at the face-off, winning 11 draws to Ward Melville's five.

"I’m proud of my guys," Radomski said. "We’re county champs, something they’ll be proud of for the rest of their lives, and we’ll be back next year."
