In a letter to families, Massapequa School Superintendent Lucille Iconis reassured parents that their children would be safe in the schools from the novel coronavirus that's spreading around the world.

With one confirmed case in New York, the virus has officially made its way here. While there are dozens of people being monitored for the virus on Long Island, there are no confirmed cases here.

"The Health Commissioner has assured us that there is no reason for any change in school activities, however prudent practices and protocols should be followed," Iconis wrote.

The district has not yet announced the cancellation of any activities or plans, and there are no special measures being taken. However, there are things people can do to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and other viruses in general:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching face, eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when feeling ill.
  • If exhibiting flu-like symptoms, such as fever and cough, keep your child at home and consult your family doctor.
  • Cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
