Massapequa Schools Receive Foreign Language Program Award
Representatives from the district's World Language Department accepted the award at the annual conference last month.

MASSAPEQUA, NY - Massapequa School District’s World Language Department recently received the 2017 James E. Allen Distinguished Foreign Language Program award.
Department representatives attended the annual conference hosted by the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers in Niagara Falls last month.
The local district was chosen as both the winner for the New York City-Long Island region and as the overall state winner.

The award recognizes the district for having a model foreign language program. Curriculum Associate for World Languages and ENL William Anderson along with Administrative Associate for General Administration Lisa Silveri and world language teachers Stacy Chesloff and Pamela Schellberg accepted the award on behalf of the district.
Massapequa offers six languages: American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. A Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program is in its second year providing Spanish instruction to third- and fourth-graders.

There are language clubs and honor societies at the high school level and an annual World Language Festival.
