They are the neighborhood kids who once delivered newspapers and carried our packages.
They sold us Girl Scout cookies and Little League candy.
They knocked on front doors dressed in costumes looking for Halloween treats.
Yesterday the 6,000 boots on the ground were the little feet that ran on tracks, swam in swimming meets and competed for prizes.
Many of us sat in bleachers and applauded them on sunny afternoons when they competed in softball games.
In springtime we gathered to watch them dress up for proms.
We remember how we cheered at their graduations.
A few won scholarships.
Several went to West Point, Annapolis or The U. S. Air Force Academy.
A few stayed home and worked in our villages before donning uniforms and wearing military boots
Some of us were invited to their weddings.
Later we were their guests at Christenings when another generation was welcomed by young parents.
The 6,000 troops casually mentioned today sans emotion are America’s 6,000 beloved sons and daughters.
They are 6,000 of our children who must now leave to protect us, our country and the life we cherish and enjoy..
The committed Boots on the Ground will be comprised of flesh and blood. They are not merely an easily quoted statistic.
6,000 beautiful human beings now go into peril.
They are sent not only to protect, but to pay for America’s mistakes.
