School Vote 2018: Massapequa Budget And BOE Candidates

Here's everything you need to know before you head to the polls on May 15.

When Massapequa residents head to the polls on May 15, they will be voting on their school district budget, for Board of Education trustees, and to decide whether or not to build an aquatic center in the district.

The proposed 2018-19 budget is $199.8 million, up from the current spending plan of $194.6 million. That comes with a tax levy increase of 1.93 percent, which is within the district's limit under the tax cap.

This year, there are four people running for two open seats. Residents will be choosing between Jeanine Caramore, Tina Cardali, Rose Stein and Kerry Wachter.

The big proposition this year is whether or not to build an aquatic center at Alfred G. Berner Middle School. It would cost the district $15.3 million to build the pool, which would be used for physical education and for the district's swim teams.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Massapequa High School, Fairfield Elementary School, Lockhart Elementary School and McKenna Elementary School.
