The School Year Starts With Smiles At Massapequa
Students were welcomed back with open arms to kick off the 2018-19 school year.
“I’m just looking forward to having a great year,” said Fairfield Elementary School fifth-grader Allison Hassell, who was reunited with her friends and met her new teacher on the first day of school on Sept. 6.
The Massapequa School District opened its doors after a productive summer in which students took advantage of numerous academic, art and athletic programs, several new administrators and teachers joined the educational staff, and building upgrades were completed.
Students went into the new school year upbeat and ready to make new memories. Allison and her classmates, who are in their last year of elementary school, said they recognize the importance of serving as good role models and setting a positive example for the younger students.

“There was an excitement in the air,” said Fairfield Principal Lori Dano, shortly after all the children arrived and were settled into their classrooms. “Students, staff, administrators and parents are enthusiastic about the new year, which will be full of opportunities to learn and grow.”
At East Lake Elementary School, students were greeted by positive and encouraging messages written on the sidewalks around the building. Teachers and staff spent the prior day creating the colorful entrances with sayings such as “Welcome back” and “Best Year Ever!” along with drawings of the sun, flowers and smiley faces.

“We really wanted to welcome our students to East Lake and put smiles on their faces before they entered the building,” said Assistant Principal Mary Velte. “Our staff members were super excited to do this, as they know that a small, simple act can really make a difference.”
