Police: Man Arrested After Burglarizing Occupied Bayport Home

Incident occurred Wednesday afternoon.

A homeless man was arrested shortly after he burglarized an occupied Bayport home on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The burglary occurred on Middle Road at 1:40 p.m. Police said a resident heard someone knocking on the front door and ringing the doorbell but decided not to answer. Shortly after, the man who had been at the door broke a rear window and entered the home, police said.

The resident hid in the house was able to flee out the back door when the burglar went upstairs, police said.

The burglar fled the home with jewelry, food and a hunting knife, police said.

Fifth Precinct police officers Michael Coyne and Matthew Dematteo, along with Lieutenant Kenneth Fasano, located the suspected burglar, Edward Phillips, a short distance from the home and arrested him after a brief struggle at 2:09 p.m.

Phillips, 35, is charged with second degree burglary and resisting arrest.

Phillips was being held at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
