Want a little history on your next walk around the neighborhood? Head to the northern part of Merrick and learn about Merokeans of the 19th century.
Made up of concentric circles, Merrick's "Tiny Town" is both historic and impressive. Located north of Sunrise Highway just off of Merrick Avenue, the narrow streets are lined with small cottage houses that date back to the 1860s. Methodists from around the state congregated in Merrick annually to discuss events.
Hundreds to thousands of people used to gather in the area. Meetings were held in the chapel, which still stands today as well as the homes of former clergy members. Horse-drawn carriages would bring visitors to the center of the area where the streets intersected and where the tabernacle was displayed. Tents were arranged around the structure. The area is also known as the campgrounds since Methodists used to camp-out for meetings.
Presently, small signs line the streets to tell of its history. When checking it out, it is better to do so on foot. Streets are often one-ways and too narrow for even one car to fit on. Many homes are built within feet of each other and with one step you can straddle the lawns of two adjacent homes.
