Police: Cop Shoots Man Who Attempted to Run Over Officers

Baldwin man suffers non-life threatening injuries, three officers treated for trauma Saturday.

A Baldwin man attempting to flee from police was shot by an officer after he tried to run over cops in Westbury early Saturday, police said.

Levaughn Tingle, 25, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the shooting, police said.

According to police, Third Precinct officers responded to a call for suspicious car with an occupant in the front seat of 722 Clinton Street in Westbury around 4:19 a.m.

As police approached the vehicle on foot, Tingle attempted to quickly flee the scene, police said.

Tingle struck a parked vehicle and then intentionally drove toward the officers, causing them to retreat up the driveway of a Clinton Street residence, police said.

As the officers were repositioning to avoid being crushed between the house and vehicle, Tingle violently maneuvered the vehicle while in the driveway attempting to run down the officers a second time, police said.

An officer then fired several rounds at Tingle, who was struck. Tingle was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Three officers were also taken to a local hospital for trauma.

The vehicle Tingle was driving was reported stolen, police said.

Tingle has previous convictions for attempted burglary, criminal possession of stolen property, petty larceny and is on parole for burglary, police said. Tingle also has an active arrest parole warrant for absconding, police said.
