High Winds Leave Thousands Without Power In The Hudson Valley

Every county was affected, but Ulster, where people just recovered from a crippling ice storm, was hardest-hit.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The severe thunderstorms and gusty winds that came through the region Monday night left thousands of homes and businesses without power.

The worst damage was in Ulster County, which has been hit hard by hazardous weather in the past six weeks, including an ice storm that toppled trees and broke power lines leaving half of its residents without electricity for days. SEE: Ulster County Declares Emergency; Warming Centers Open

More than 6,600 Ulster homes and businesses, customers of the three power companies that serve the county, were out of power Tuesday morning.

Many scattered power outages were also reported in Orange, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Putnam counties.

  • CenHud reported 10,590 customers out of power, including 512 in Dutchess, 1,411 in Orange, 71 in Putnam and 6,308 in Ulster.
  • NYSEG is working on more than 15,000 outages, but most are upstate. In the Hudson Valley, NYSEG reported 70 out in Dutchess, 149 out in Putnam, 3 in Orange, 346 in Ulster and 221 in Westchester.
  • Con Edison reported 693 customers out of power in Westchester County at 9:45 a.m., most in the south, with an estimated restoration time of 11 p.m.
  • O&R reported 89 customers without electricity in Rockland County and 218 in Orange. Crews were still evaluating the problems.
