Police Question Mother Of Dead Newborn In Port Jervis

The child's body was found abandoned in a vacant lot.

PORT JERVIS, NY — Police have questioned a woman in connection with the dead newborn child found abandoned in a vacant lot in Port Jervis. Police said the woman is the mother of the child, and her name is not being released at this time because the investigation is continuing.

According to a press release, Port Jervis police found the body of the child around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at 39 Orange St. at the intersection with Hornbeck Avenue.

The child appeared to have been recently born and still had the umbilical cord attached, police said.

The scene was sealed off by police for forensic processing, and an autopsy was performed by the Orange County Medical Examiner. Results of toxicology and further testing are pending.
