Woman Accused Of Abandoning Baby Answers Charges
Authorities said the woman gave birth to the child in a motel toilet and then left to use drugs.

GOSHEN, NY — A plea of not guilty was entered in Orange County Court Friday from the woman accused of abandoning a newborn in a motel toilet. Teresa Rose Smith, 23, faces attempted murder, reckless endangerment, assault and child abandonment, all felonies.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Kelly said that Smith gave birth to the child Nov. 1 in a toilet bowl, cleaned herself up and left to use drugs, recordonline.com said.
Smith's bail was increased to $100,000 or $200,000 bond, which she was unable to post. Her bail was originally set at $25,000 or $50,000 bond.

Motel staff went in to clean the room after Smith left and found blood in the bathroom and around the toilet.
The child was found in the water of the toilet bowl.

First responders were able to revive the child, who is now in the custody of child protective services.
