LI Cop Navigates Treacherous Ice In Daring Rescue Of Trapped Fawn
The marine unit officer shimmied out on a sled to take hold of the animal, while teammates held a rescue line, Suffolk cops say.

SHIRLEY, NY — A fawn that fell through the ice of a semi-frozen Long Island bay was freed in a daring rescue by a police officer on Sunday.
Suffolk cops say that a Smith Point County Park ranger reported a deer stuck in the ice at Narrow Bay, just off of Shirley, at about 4:18 p.m., resulting in the deployment of the department's trusty Marine "Mike."
But when the unit arrived, officers discovered the deer was not fully grown and still only just a fawn.

Officer Robert King used an ice sled to approach the fawn, while officers Robert Daniels and Gary Quenzer tended the line on the sled, police said, adding, that King was able to reach the animal and lift it out of the 40-degree water and onto the sled.
Daniels and Quenzer then pulled the sled carrying the fawn and its big-hearted rescuer back to the safety of the shoreline just before 5 p.m., police said.
