'Numerous' Shots Fired At Mount Vernon Garbage Truck
An unknown gunman fired shots in the direction of sanitation workers as they collected trash cans near Edwards Williams Middle School.
MOUNT VERNON, NY — City workers in Mount Vernon faced gunfire this morning while they were just trying to do their jobs.
"Numerous" gun shots were fired at a Mount Vernon Department of Public Works garbage truck Thursday morning, according to the Mount Vernon Police Department.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Shortly before 9 a.m., Mount Vernon police responded to reports of gunshots fired at a Department of Public Works garbage truck. Officers found "numerous" spent shell casings on the corner of Union Lane and East 5th St. They also found evidence of substantial nearby damaged private property.
After interviewing the DPW employees, officers learned that someone had fired a handgun in the direction of the sanitation crew from the corner of Union Lane and East 5th St. as the crew was emptying garbage cans into the back of the garbage truck.

Investigators have been canvassing the area for cameras and witnesses.
Police officials said that the motive for the shooting and if the DPW employees were targeted remain unclear. The names of the city employees are being withheld as the investigation into the shooting continues.
