YONKERS, NY — The most populous city in Westchester County is also now ranked as the third biggest city in New York, according to new U.S. Census data.

According to census count information released on Thursday, Yonkers is home to 211,569 residents. The city narrowly beat out Rochester, with a population of 211,328 people, as the third-largest city in the state by just 241 people.

Rochester's population grew for the first time in the last 70 years, but it wasn’t enough to stay ahead of the Hudson Valley neighbor to the South.

Rochester city officials, however, questioned the just released census numbers, noting that the Trump administration’s attempts to stymie counting hurt the city’s numbers, according to a report from NPR Rochester affiliate WXXI. The Census Bureau denied a request from Rochester to provide a list of uncounted households in the city.

"We're happy about the fact that Rochester's population grew, even just slightly," spokesperson Justin Roj told the radio station.

New York City remains by far the largest city in the state. Buffalo retained its second-place ranking in the latest census.

Yonkers also made gains on New York’s second city as well. The population in Yonkers increased by 7.9 percent from the 2010 census. The population of Buffalo only grew by 6.5 percent over this same time period.
