Double Twilight: No Land’s Ritual of Sound and Spirit at Roulette

On May 25th at Roulette Intermedium, something otherworldly will unfold—not a concert, not a reading, but a ceremonial crossing. Double Twilight, the latest multidisciplinary work from poet and visual alchemist No Land, defies conventional genre to become something far more rare: a collective invocation through sound, language, and atmosphere.

Commissioned by Roulette for their 2024-2025 season, Double Twilight is the culmination of years of No Land’s artistic excavations—through poetry, film, performance, and the esoteric. This premiere offers audiences a front-row seat to a living séance, where poems are summoned like spirits, and every note, gesture, and image feels pulled from the space between worlds.

This is not a solo effort. No Land has gathered an extraordinary ensemble of artists whose talents orbit the experimental vanguard: Oliver Ray on guitar and electronics, Shahzad Ismaily on bass and alchemical intuition, Daniel Carter on saxophones and trumpet, Gabriel Gall on shimmering keys, Miriam Parker in movement meditation, and poet-oracles Anne Waldman and Louise Landes Levi among the voices guiding the passage. Their improvisations serve not merely as accompaniment, but as the very terrain the work moves through—fluid, unpredictable, electric.

At the heart of Double Twilight is transformation. The space itself becomes part of the performance: scrolls unfurl like spells, an altar of handwritten texts and ritual objects glows beneath low light, pigments and metallic dust shimmer across projected visuals. No Land’s voice enters not as performer, but as medium—poems spilling forth not as rehearsed literature, but as living transmissions. Each moment is a gesture toward the liminal, the sacred, the not-yet-said.

Thematically, the work touches everything: grief and grace, ancestry and futurity, disintegration and emergence. But it never settles into one narrative. Instead, it drifts—like a dream half-remembered, or a memory that belongs to someone else. “Double Twilight” becomes both a time and a place: where endings and beginnings overlap, and nothing is stable except the act of becoming.

Roulette, a long-standing incubator for experimental forms, provides the ideal sanctuary for this kind of work. As the audience enters, they become not just spectators, but witnesses. This is not a stage for performance, but for invocation—for listening not just with ears, but with the whole body.

The performance will also stream live on Roulette’s YouTube channel, extending the ritual beyond physical space, but for those in New York, this is best experienced in person: within the pulse of the room, among the shimmer of breath and sound and light.
