New Rochelle Man Gets 17 Years For Killing His Mom

The 28-year-old put his 54-year-old mother into a chokehold during a disagreement at her New Rochelle home in March of 2020.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Daniel Flores-Arteaga, 28, was sentenced on September 15, to 17 years in state prison, with five years of post-release supervision, for applying a fatal chokehold to his mother during a dispute in her home in New Rochelle, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced today.

On March 17, 2020, at approximately 1 p.m., Flores-Arteaga put his 54-year-old mother into a chokehold. When New Rochelle police officers arrived at the scene, they found the 28-year-old in the home and his mother unconscious on the floor.

Authorities said Flores-Arteaga told them he had strangled his mother until she passed out. He was initially charged with second-degree attempted murder.

The mother never regained consciousness. She was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, where she was placed on life support and pronounced dead less than a week later, on March 26, 2020, as a result of her injuries.

In July, the defendant pled guilty to felony manslaughter in the first degree.
