Schools, Colleges In New Rochelle Mount Voter Registration Drive

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Thousands of national, state and local organizations and volunteers celebrated National Voter Registration Day Tuesday with a 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November. New Rochelle was part of the action, as mayors across the country linked arms with educators in a special effort to encourage students to get registered.

In New Rochelle, the City School District, Iona College, the College of New Rochelle, Monroe College, and The Ursuline School – in conjunction with the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle – made voter registration forms available and encouraged eligible students to become voters. Mayor Noam Bramson visited each campus.

“High school and college students have the power to make a real difference in our community and nation, and have a profound stake in the choices made by government. So whether Democrat, Republican, or Independent, whether liberal, moderate, or conservative, we encourage every eligible young person in New Rochelle to register, to vote, and to make their voice heard,” Bramson said.

At New Rochelle High School, the mayor received petitions from students supporting his participation in
Mayors For Our Lives ; and visited the AP Government and Politics class to discuss with students the
importance of young voter participation.

“It is heartening to see how engaged many of our students are in the world around them,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne. “Voting is the most direct way they can participate in government on a local, state and national level. I am encouraged to see that so many of our students understand the importance of voting, whether they are old enough to vote or not. Also, I would like to thank the League of Women Voters of New Rochelle and Mayor Noam Bramson for spending time at New Rochelle High School, educating the students about voting, and helping those who are old enough to register.”

Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. More than two million Americans have registered to vote on this day since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day.

Voter registration information can be found at the Westchester County Board of Elections where forms can be downloaded in English or Spanish .

"Voters, one by one, are the most powerful people in a democracy,” said Ina Aronow of the New Rochelle
League. “The politicians that voters choose to set policy and make decisions about government services make a big difference in our lives. So it is important also to learn what we can about the people running for office and make good choices when we vote. And maybe some of us will choose to run for public office ourselves.”
