On Saturday, Oct. 1, Benton/Nyce is proud to present חַי (chai, life), an exhibition by three artists at Brecknock Hall in Greenport. Works by David Nyce, Arden Scott, and Robert Oxnam will be on display sponsored by and to benefit Congregation Tifereth Israel.
David Nyce will present several pieces of furniture made from the beech tree that was beside St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. He honors the tree’s history by allowing the bark, the “live edge” of the material to remain in the meticulously finished piece.
Sculptor Arden Scott continues her endeavor to carry us toward spiritual depth in mysterious vessels. Her travels to Laos and Cambodia are evident in works that resemble time-scarred artifacts that could have been forged in metal and wood by an ancient people.

Robert Oxnam is the former president of the Asia Society and has written several books on China. His driftwood sculpture is informed by Chinese scholar’s rocks, which were believed to represent the linkage between individual creativity and “qi” or cosmic energy.
