Fire Guts Garage At Peconic Home

More than 50 firefighters were at the scene to knock down the blaze, officials say.

PECONIC, NY — A fire gutted the garage at a home in Peconic Wednesday night, police said.

According to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, the structure fire took place around 8:30 p.m. and was brought under control, with the arson squad responding.

Southold Fire Department Chief Engineer James Rich said the fire, which broke out at the Peconic Lane home, was fully involved in the detached garage when firefighters arrived. The garage, Rich said, was a "total loss."

No one was home at the time of the fire, and it was not deemed suspicious, but the arson squad was called as a matter of course, he said.

Five fire apparatus, one ambulance — as a precautionary measure — and more than 50 firefighters were at the scene for 1 hour and 45 minutes, knocking down the blaze, Rich said.

No personal injuries were reported, he said.

It was the second structure fire in two days on the North Fork this week; a blaze in Mattituck took the life of a dog at the house Tuesday night.
