Known as the East End’s premier Older Americans Month event, it is open to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness abilities, offering both a relaxed mile-long walk and a more challenging 3.1 mile run.

Over 400 participants are expected to take part with more than 150 volunteers, including students from area school districts, helping throughout the day.

Peconic Landing president and CEO Robert J. Syron, who will be hosting the event, recently presented the “Older American Champion Award” to David Nyce, outgoing mayor of Greenport Village.

The annual award honors a local individual for his or her years of service and continued dedication to older Americans, acknowledging the difference they make in older Americans’ quality of life.

“David Nyce recognizes the important role our greatest generation plays in this community, having spent much of his eight-year term listening and acting upon their recommendations and concerns,” Syron said. “Peconic Landing is proud to honor David Nyce with this award.”

Since it began in 2005, the annual event has raised more than $160,000 for the department.

Last year’s campaign raised a total of $25,200, helping the department to purchase, refurbish and maintain rescue equipment vital to keeping fire department volunteers safe during response efforts.

A portion of the donation was also used to purchase a marine rescue boat.

“It helps us out tremendously. It allows us to budget for equipment and uniforms that we might not otherwise be able to fund,” Chief Harry Breese of the Greenport Fire Department said. “ It takes a lot of people to make an event like this happen for us. We really appreciate everyone who comes out.”
