The stream of residents headed to the Mattituck High School gym on Tuesday was very slow, according to district clerk Cathy Gillard.
"Turnout is very low," she said. As of 6:30, she said, 529 people had cast their ballots. "That's probably half of what we had last year."
Audrey Grathwahl, who was selling tickets to a school event in the lobby, agreed. "It's very slow," she said. "I've never seen it this quiet."
But still, Grathwahl said, a steady stream of voters was slowly trickling in. "I'm a teacher in the school so I've turned out to support the budget," said Catherine Clark of Cutchogue.
The 2013-2014 budget of 38.8 million reflects an increase in spending of 2.24 percent and an estimated tax rate increase of 3.28 percent.
The proposed tax levy of 3.28 percent is below the tax cap.
