Elwood Celebrates Community With Live Music, Sports Games, Cook-Off

It was a day to celebrate pride and community.

Members of the community celebrated Elwood pride and unity at an outdoor celebration on Friday, May 8.

The Community Day celebration provided live music, a cook off, activities for kids, an art show and various athletic games.

A band of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students, the Coconutz faculty band and a variety of other bands provided the entertainment for the night.

People of all ages were able to participate in various activities including: sand art, a bounce house, face painting and tattoos.

Event attendees were also able to check out Elwood Middle School students participate in a robotics competition and watch the lacrosse, baseball and softball teams compete in athletic games throughout the day.

During a halftime presentation, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern awarded Elwood resident Rosemarie Kluepfel the 2015 Suffolk County Women of Distinction Award and the Board of Education President Joseph Fusaro was presented a proclamation from the Town of Huntington for Elwood’s silver medal School of Opportunity recognition.

Elwood students competed in a cook-off challenge against Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo, Board of Education Vice President Dan Ciccone and district parent Cesar Callejos. The culinary students were victorious and claimed the Iron Chef Champions title.

“We hope this event brings light to what we are doing here in Elwood and the great programs that are being offered,” Assistant Superintendent for Business Keri Loughlin said.
